The first thing Kylee Schoonens did when she joined architectural practice Fratelle Group in 2010 as co-director was to plan for business growth by creating company structures, policies and procedures. At the time Ms Schoonens was, and still is, the youngest female director of an architectural practice in Western Australia. She is using this as an opportunity to shift industry perceptions of female architects, particularly in executive roles.
As creative director Ms Schoonens is responsible for overseeing the design and creative direction for all projects, providing inspiration and technical knowledge to staff. She also holds the role of director, working on business development, quality assurance and management of project teams for large-scale and complex projects.
Ms Schoonens also provides mentoring and advice for high school and university students and has created a mentoring program within Fratelle Group, allowing the staff to pass on their knowledge to the next generation of architects.
She is an active member of the Australian Institute of Architects, and has been a jury member for the WA architecture awards.
