AGIG to expand WA’s largest gas storage facility

Australian Gas Infrastructure Group has announced it is expanding its Tubridgi gas storage facility near Onslow in the north-west of Western Australia.

AGIG has committed to complete a seismic survey and expand its injection capacity from 50 terajoules a day to 90 terajoules a day, and its withdrawal capacity from 50 terajoules a day to 60 terajoules a day.

The facility stores gas in an old reservoir which can then be tapped and transported in AGIG-owned pipelines such as the Dampier Bunbury Pipeline.

In July the company opened the $74 million facility, which is the largest gas storage facility in WA and the third largest in Australia.

Tubridgi has a storage capacity of around 42 petajoules, while APA Group’s Mondarra, WA’s other gas storage facility, has a storage capacity of 15 petajoules.

Mondarra is located near Dongara at the intersection of the Dampier Bunbury Pipeline and APA’s Parmelia Gas Pipeline.

The seismic survey for Tubridgi will define the maximum storage volume for customers and assess the potential risk for any additional wells that may be installed in the future.

AGIG’s chief customer officer Andrew Staniford said the company embarked on the latest expansion projects in response to strong demand in the WA domestic gas market for gas storage services.

“The new expansion works are a necessary part of ensuring that AGIG can continue to meet market demand in the longer term and provide our customers with the flexibility they require to meet their energy requirements,” Mr Staniford said.

“These latest projects further increase our role as an owner and operator of critical infrastructure in the State and demonstrate AGIG’s confidence in WA as an investment destination, reinforcing our positive position towards improving energy security.”
