There are moments when policy collides with geology, and when it does, fortunes can shift overnight. The decision by the US Department of Defence, announced last week, to take a half-billion-dollar equity stake in the country's only producing rare earths mine has thrust the geopolitical spotlight onto a handful of ASX-listed juniors and reshaped their prospects in a flash.

Eclipse Metals has unveiled data modelling which shows a wealth of cryolite and fluorite mineralisation just below the pit floor at its Ivittuut project in Greenland. Data mining points to a blanket of mineral-rich ore that lies 20 metres below the historic open pit, with old drill intercepts showing up to 10.7 metres of mineralisation at an eye-catching 55 per cent cryolite and 22.1 per cent fluorite from only 29.54m down-hole.

ASX-listed explorer, Eclipse Metals has uncovered encouraging rare earth elements sniffs from a reinterpretation of old surface samples taken from the Gronnedal-lka deposit area within its recently acquired historic Ivittuut project tenement holdings in south-western Greenland. Total rare earth element readings gleaned from its analysis of historic rock chip samples collected at the carbonatite deposit were as high as 34,400 parts per million.

Initial exploration over the historic mining area has established that the ore system consists of multiple, steeply dipping high-grade lenses that remain untested by drilling and with demand for the battery metal looking set to sky-rocket the timing is good for Eclipse.

The company has reached an agreement with traditional owners to enter into negotiations to approve exploration across the two new leases that surround the Devil's Elbow prospect, giving it access to key targets in the world-class Alligator River Uranium Field.
