The former Department of Regional Development (DRD) was a vibrant agency with a clear agenda: to develop thriving towns and communities in regional Western Australia. It was the lead agency of the Royalties for Regions program. Its vision was to have well-managed, strong and vibrant communities that build and deliver opportunities, facilities and services appropriate to their people. Its mission was to facilitate the development of sustainable regional communities so they have a sense of purpose and control over their future.

The Department of Regional Development was amalgamated with the Department of Agriculture and Food, Department of Fisheries and the nine Regional Development Commissions on the 1st July 2017 to form the new Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
