Department of Local Government and Communities
The former Department of Local Government and Communities was the state government agency responsible for strengthening and supporting the local government and community sectors in Western Australia. The department aimed to harness the positive work that was already occurring across the State while responding to the changing needs of our communities. The department also focused on supporting seniors, youth, carers, women, volunteers, children and families, parenting and early years, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; with a focus on building closer collaboration and stronger partnerships between the state government, local government and community service organisations.
On 1 July 2017 the Department of Local Government and Communities was amalgamated with the Department of Child Protection and Family Support, Housing Authority and the Disability Services Commission to form the new Department of Communities.
