Overview

Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Hon Jenny Macklin MP, will give CEDA an exclusive update on how the Government is progressing towards achieving its six key Indigenous targets.

In a bid to improve living standards for Indigenous Australians, the Government set the following six targets in February 2008:

• Closing the gap on life expectancy within a generation
• Halving the gap in mortality for children under five within a decade
• All four-year-olds in remote communities will have access to early childhood education within five years
• Halve the gap for children in reading, writing and numeracy within a decade
• Halve the gap for Indigenous students in Year 12 attainment (or equivalent) by 2020
• Halve the gap in employment outcomes within a decade

Four years later, and with $8.2 billion spent on Indigenous-specific National Partnership Agreements, how is the Federal Government tracking against each of these targets? How are other influencing bodies contributing to Indigenous outcomes?
