As a politician, Andrew Hastie has established himself as a prominent voice on national security and defence issues.

Before winning the federal seat of Canning in the 2015 by-election, Andrew served in the Australian Defence Force for 13 years, including in Afghanistan as a Troop Commander with the Special Air Service Regiment, taking commands in maritime and special reconnaissance capabilities.

As a Parliamentarian, Andrew doesn’t shy away from championing democratic values. From 2017 to 2020, he served as the Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security, where he oversaw the passage of historic Espionage and Foreign Interference legislation.

Andrew served as Assistant Minister for Defence in the former Coalition government and was recently appointed Shadow Minister for Defence.
