Thomas Murrell is an award winning broadcaster, international business speaker and media consultant.
His company, 8M Media & Communications, provides solutions to media and communication issues for Top 500 companies, government agencies and leading universities. Prior to establishing 8M, Mr Murrell had a distinguished 12-year career with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. At age 28, he was the youngest ever ABC senior executive to be appointed to manager of regional stations in Western Australia (1991 – 1997). He has also managed Perth’s news, information and entertainment station, 720 6WF. He was executive producer of rural programs in Western Australia and presenter of a national Mining and Resources program on Radio National. Other television and radio credits include Country Hour presenter - Western Australia and Tasmania, Rural Reporter - Sydney and Launceston and weather presenter for ABC TV News.
He won several State and International broadcasting awards and in 1988 was the recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Scholarship for Young Australians. In 1999, Mr Murrell was awarded a prestigious Vincent Fairfax Fellowship which is a leadership development program enabling “people of exceptional promise to make a difference to the world in which they live” and is designed and administered by the St James Ethics Centre, Sydney.
Mr Murrell is the author of "China Media - The Ethics of Influence", featuring interviews with 10 of Asia's most influential media operators, journalists and public relations consultants.
Academic qualifications include an Honours Degree in Agricultural Science from Adelaide University, a Graduate Diploma in Agricultural Economics from the University of New England, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Western Australia. Mr Murrell is a highly sought after presenter and a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) with the National Speakers Association of Australia.
A former Australian Junior Hammer Throw Champion and three times Australian Intervarsity Champion, Mr Murrell was awarded a Full Blue in Athletics from Adelaide University in 1984. He was selected in the Australian Track and Field training squad for the 1982 Commonwealth Games.
An active interest in garden design is fulfilled as former chair of Australia’s Open Garden Scheme in Western Australia, a not-for-profit organisation which aims to promote the knowledge and pleasure of gardening.
