Top US official to visit Perth

US Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland will visit Perth later this month, the first such visit since former secretary of state Hillary Clinton touched down in 2012.  

Ms Haaland’s role is equivalent to a minister in the cabinet of US President Joe Biden.

Her portfolio includes management of land, fisheries, national parks and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Ms Haaland is the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary, and a citizen of the Laguna Pueblo people.

The key event of the secretary’s Perth trip will be a speech hosted by Perth USAsia Centre on February 14. 

At that speech, Ms Haaland will talk about the importance of Indigenous knowledge, collaborative conservation and international partnerships to stop climate change.
