The Note loves to trawl the annual returns of WA’s political parties to see just who gives what. According to the Australian Electoral Commission records for the year ending June 30, 2008, the Libs recorded $7 million in donations, more than double their rivals. While much of that Liberal money is filtered anonymously through the 500 Club, there are plenty of property identities who coughed up including property and Toyota magnate Stan Perron, Mid West land developer Ardross Estates, high rise builder Peter Laurance, Port Bouvard’s Ross Neumann and Saracen Properties. Mining was also well represented with Mark Ashley, Michael Kiernan and Sally Malay Mining. Other prominent business names are Austal Ships, Charlie Morgan, Great Southern, Aaron Constantine, Gordon Martin, John Poynton, Schaffer Corp and Marylyn New. On the Labor side, donors were a little more sparse. Among them were Alcoa, Allsite Operations, Ascot Capital, Burswood, Sanur Pty Ltd, Mineralogy and Transfield.Wesfarmers and Newman motel developer Haniff Kassim (or associated company Auzcorp) donated $20,000 or more to both parties.
