CONSTRUCTION of a $4 million development on Oxford Street in Leederville is expected to start next month.
The mixed-use retail and residential project will feature eight luxury apartments, three strata titled offices, a tower and a restaurant space on Oxford Street.
Brothers Tom and Greg McAlister, partners in McAlister and McAlister Builders, own the land adjacent to Kailis Brothers bordering the carpark behind the shops on Oxford Street.
Tom McAlister said he was expecting to receive the building licence in early February.
And it’s hoped the apartments will sell for between $450,000 and $500,000, but the financial details are still to be finalised.
A sign on Oxford Street promoting the development has attracted some attention and Mr McAlister claims there is a long list of inquiries from people interested in buying the apartments.
“We proposed to sell the residential units and possibly another couple of bits of it, but we certainly won’t sell the restaurant area,” Mr McAlister said.
The three-bedroom apartments will include security and an elegant “European” feel.
“There’ll be a lot of height and elegance, it’ll have a nice rich feeling,” Mr McAlister said.
The Town of Vincent also has proposed an upgrade of the lane that bounds the McAlisters’ land, running back to the carpark.
The lane will be paved, trees planted and lighting will be upgraded to make it safer for pedestrians.
The McAlister family has owned the land for many years, including the shop front on Oxford Street, which belonged to Mr McAlister’s father.
“Our family had the land right across the freeway into West Leederville. Greg and I both worked in the business as carpenters and joiners,” Mr McAlister said. “With all that history we decided to preserve the site and develop it.”
The heritage value of the building will not be lost, however, with an entrance statement to include a description of the original building.
