THE September quarter 2000 international trade data for Australian states shows WA is still producing the highest value of exports in Australia.
For the period, WA exported $7,237 million and imported only $2,047 million worth of goods. The latest quarter’s figures are a 34.9 per cent improvement on the September quarter from last year.
This growth is well above any other state. It has however, moderated from its peak of 53.9 per cent in the June quarter of 2000, largely due to easing commodity prices.
Nevertheless the growth rates are strong and reflect a weaker Australian dollar, increased production capacity and buoyant international demand for our commodities.
The volume of gold, crude minerals and wheat exports all fell over the period. Live animal exports rose 43.2 per cent. Meat was up 24 per cent, crustacean exports rose 24 per cent, nickel rose 17.3 per cent and iron ore exports rose 13.3per cent.
