It appears Loose Box executive chef Alan Fabregues has as much talent for auctioneering as he does for French cooking.

The renowned chef was part of a star-studded cooking team offering its time and service for last week’s Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia charity dinner. But aside from cooking dessert for about 250 people, Mr Fabregues brought one of the first truffles produced by the Wine and Truffle Co this season, and helped drive the price to $1,900.

Mr Fabregues left the kitchen during auction time to take place at the MC’s podium to chat to bidders about the truffles farmed in Manjimup. He also offered to cook the very large truffle at his restaurant for anyone bidding over $1,500.

Other guest chefs included Star Anise’s David Coomer, Jackson Restaurant’s Neal Jackson, Fraser’s Chris Taylor and the Sheraton’s Xavier Pique.

The night raised $154,000, at last count, for the Starlight Foundation.

Amano Cooking School owner Bev Sprague (unrelated to this columnist) and husband Paul were big contributors to the night. Aside from Mrs Sprague’s role in the advisory group, she and her husband topped the bids at $5,100 for the talents of Vince Gareffa and his staff at Mondo’s to cook and clean up for the them and up to eight guests.

The Slow Food Association of WA is organising another producers’ market.

The market will take place at Wesley College on Saturday June 26 from 4pm to 8pm.

Aside from the range of food and wine suppliers there will also be a screening of the film, Slow Food Revolution, which showcases old-world cooking practices taking place in modern cities across the globe. Bookings for the film are essential and can be made by contacting the Slow Food Movement of WA president Ann Meyer at slowfood_perth@yahoo.com.au
