WITH Seniors Week coming up next week, we thought it apt to examine some of the issues involving our ageing population.
There is no doubt that this demographic shift will continue to impact on us all, as it has for the past five decades.
I won’t go on about population growth being a remedy, regular readers might be getting tired of that line from me.
However, the concerns many people (myself included) have about how to deal with an ageing population simply won’t go away.
Work well done
Finally, huge congratulations to surgeon Fiona Wood and her team at Royal Perth Hospital for their work in dealing with the victims from the Bali bombings.
I wonder if some sort of record is being set here for the number of burns victims getting the highest standard of care available anywhere.
Not only is this work vital in saving lives of the bomb victims, it has also showcased the fact that leaders in any field can practise their art here.
It has also highlighted technology here, such as C3’s spray-on skin that first came to my attention when one of the company’s directors, Marie Stoner, became one of our inaugural 40under40 winners.
I was intrigued to see the ABC’s 7.30 Report cover this development, including some criticism from an east coast medical researcher regarding the fact that this technology is in private hands.
So what if someone makes money from improving medical knowledge?
It is better than the technology being sold off to offshore companies because they are better placed to commercialise it.
Good luck to C3. May those involved profit from their work to ease the suffering and scarring of burns victims.
