The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of WA has met the challenges of 1999 and stood out as the peak lobby for WA industry said CCIWA president Graham Greig in his address to the Chamber’s eighth annual general meeting.
“The principle focus has been on addressing the pressures of competition and globalisation, which has laid bare the shortcomings of the state’s industrial infrastructure and the need for continuing competition reform, especially in the energy sector,” Mr Greig said.
He said the chamber stood tall with relation to workers’ compensation.
“The Chamber played a key role assisting the government and the Auditor-General to analyse the problems and frame legislative changes to save the system from collapse,” he said.
Mr Greig also warned the Court government not to become timid for fear of a public backlash as happened in Victoria recently.
“It is of great concern to CCI that the Court government’s initial zeal for a competitive WA has been in decline of late,” he said.
“The government needs to return its focus to the serious economic issues and to provide a clear agenda for lifting the state’s performance.”
