Building sector holds up in WA

THE outlook for the industrial and commercial building sector is weak nationally, according to a report by the Housing Industry Association.

However WA and South Australia should be able to hold their own.

“National activity is forecast to fall by 6 per cent this year and by a further 5 per cent in 2000-01,” the report said.

“The economic impact of the coming decline in private construction will be severe.

“Some of the participants in this industry will be unprepared for the shake-out ahead.

“In the recent past, slack demand for non-residential construction led many firms to compete in the housing market. By mid-2000 however we expect the housing market to be falling too,” it said.
