Dr Soolim Carney has over 20 years of experience in the mining industry, specialising in environment, health and safety, indigenous affairs, government relations and community investment.
Dr Carney was appointed general manager of environment and community in March 2021. Prior to that, she was the regional environment manager for Alcoa’s mining, refining and smelting operations in Australia, providing leadership on environmental standards, risk management and performance.
Dr Carney also held senior health, safety and environment leadership roles across BHP’s iron ore operations in Western Australia, where she coordinated the delivery of major State and Commonwealth environmental approvals for the $20 billion Outer Harbour Development ahead of schedule and without third-party appeal. At Woodside Energy, she delivered major State and Commonwealth environmental approvals to enable board sanction of the $15 billion Pluto LNG Project.
Dr Carney holds a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, a Bachelor of Natural Resources with Honours, and was awarded her Doctorate at The University of Adelaide under a full Research Council of Australia (Industry) scholarship.
