Dr Ken Michael AC was installed as the thirtieth Governor of Western Australia on 18 January 2006, retiring from this position in May 2011.
He graduated from University of Western Australia in civil engineering in 1961, the year he joined Main Roads Western Australia as a bridge engineer. During his time at Main Roads, Dr Michael completed his PhD degree at Imperial College of Science and Technology in London. His extensive career with Main Roads culminated in his appointment as Commissioner of Main Roads. He was also Public Service Commissioner for a short period of time.
Dr Michael was Chancellor of The University of Western Australia, chair of the East Perth Redevelopment Authority, chair of the Western Australian Museum, and member of the Economic Regulation Authority.
He made a significant contribution in many areas including public service, engineering, academia and to the Western Australian community.
Dr Michael is chair of the Australian Defence Force Assistance Trust and chair of Broome Future.
He received a number of awards in recognition of his contribution to his profession and the community, and was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1996 and Companion of the Order of Australia in the 2006 Australia Day Honours.
