Orbital Corporation is a technology company with a heavy focus on research and development. Founded in 1973 on the back of a new engine design, it was largely focused on engine technologies until recent times. It remains in the engine business through the design and manufacture of propulsion systems for the unmanned aerial vehicles but it has also diversified into industrial safety via the purchase of the REMSAFE remote isolation system for global mining and industrial applications. Its recent past included the importation, manufacture, and assembly of liquid LPG systems for the Ford EcoLPi Falcon’s range of passenger cars and utilities; and imports, assembles, and distributes various LPG and CNG systems for aftermarket LPG installers and mechanical workshops, as well as develops and distributes dual fuel substitution systems to liquid natural gas and diesel vehicles for heavy duty transport. The company, started by inventor and entrepreneur Ralph Sarich, was formerly known as Orbital Engine Corporation, based on the founder's proposed orbital engine design through which he hoped to revolutionise engine construction. It was a stock market dartlin in the late 1980s and made Mr Sarich one of Western Australia's most welathy people, a status he retains today depsite having cut his links to the business. By the mid-1990s the engine concept had been abandoned but several derivative technologies had been developed, most notably a fuel-injection system which proved commercially viable. It changed name to Orbital Corporation Limited in October 2004.
