CURTIN University is helping China to prepare for membership of the World Trade Organisation.
WTO agreements provide policy for international commerce and trade with the aim of ensuring the free, smooth flow of trade between nations.
Curtin Business School’s International Business Unit recently completed key roles in an Australia-China Economics and Foreign Trade Training project for Chinese public
officials, in preparation for China’s WTO entry.
The unit has been involved in training workshops in international trade theory and policy for key Chinese academics at the University of International Business and Economics, the training ground for all Chinese diplomats.
It helped Curtin become the first university to link formally with the UIBE.
The four-year project, which started in July 1998, gained a $5.3 million contribution from Australia through AusAid and $2.1 million from China’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.
China is the world’s fifth largest trading power and the second largest recipient of
foreign investment, with
merchandise exports increasing more than twenty-fold in the same number of years.
