The Department of Housing has awarded Community Housing Limited (CHL) a tender to take over tenancy and property management of indigenous housing in the East Kimberley.
At the opening of their Western Australian office in Perth this morning, Housing Minister Bill Marmion congratulated CHL for being awarded the tender to manage the 273 properties.
"CHL have an excellent track record in providing affordable community housing both nationally and internationally, with the organisation having had success with projects all over Australia, as well as overseas," Mr Marmion said.
"The State Government is very pleased to be able to work with them here.
"The 2009 Social Housing Taskforce Report recommended that capacity in the community housing sector be increased to assist with the provision of affordable housing options and this is a step in the right direction.
"The Government is focused on providing affordable housing options for low income West Australians and working with community housing providers is an important element of this."
CHL will manage housing in 23 communities throughout the Kimberley, ranging in size from a single home to 74 houses at Kalumburu, the largest remote indigenous community in the Kimberley.
The service area for these houses is 120,000km2 - an area which is nearly the size of Victoria.
CHL have national operations in Victoria, NSW, Tasmania, WA and SA and international operations in Timor Leste, Chile and India.
"The Department of Housing has developed a State Affordable Housing Strategy which I will be taking to State Cabinet in the coming weeks," the Minister said.
"The strategy aims to provide 20,000 more affordable housing options by 2020."
