Woodside and Chevron have announced further gas discoveries in their Western Australian projects.
Chevron has announced it has hit 273 metres of net pay gas off Onslow.
Chevron vice chairman George Kirkand said the discovery at the Acme-1 in 878 metres of water to a depth of 4,175 metres is one of the company's most significant natural gas discoveries in Australia.
"As our ninth and largest offshore discovery in Western Australia in the last 12 months, it underscores the quality of our drilling program and our commitment to technical excellence and safe operations," said Mr Kirkland.
It's the second significant discovery for Chevron in the Carnarvon Basin in less than a week.
On Friday, the US energy giant said the Brederode-1 exploration well within its 50 per cent owned WA-364-P permit area had encountered about 15 metres of net gas pay.
Woodside has also announced another significant gas discovery in the same area.
The company said Larsen Deep-1 well in permit WA-404-P has intersected approximately 50 metres gross gas over several zones within the Triassic target.
The well is within 9 kilometres of Woodside's existing Central hub discoveries at Martell-1, Noblige-1 and Larsen-1.
The well is currently drilling ahead at 4914 metres and, subject to operational constraints, is planned to drill to a total depth of 5030 metres.
Yesterday Woodside announced it had also made another gas discovery in the region.
Most analysts said the Alaric-1 discovery could provide a good basis for Woodside's planned expansion of its Pluto liquefied natural gas project.
