The public will be able to access stage one of the Northbridge Piazza in May as a $1 million contract is awarded to Lakis Construction for stage two of the development.
A City of Perth spokesperson told WA Business News the public will be able to start using the piazza sometime in May, with no particular date set just yet.
The development is on the corner of James and Lake Streets.
A feature of stage one is a giant LED screen while a new community building is due for completion next month. It will eventually house a café as well as meeting rooms, offices and performance facilities.
Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said work on stage two, which includes a microbrewery and a restaurant, will start immediately after the completion of stage one.
Lakis has been awarded the contract for landscaping and civil works on the north-eastern part of the site which forms stage two of the project.
Ms Scaffidi said the piazza, on land purchased by the council, would be one of the most significant developments to happen in Northbridge.
"Northbridge is a busy daytime and night-time precinct and this new public place will add another dimension to the Northbridge experience," she said.
"The piazza will be a focal point in the area, offering an attractive, relaxing environment with entertainment and dining facilities."
