RETAIL industry employers have been praised for the way they are establishing career paths.
Employment National retail sales executive for WA Anna Vroomans said in recent years many employers and a growing number of small retail operators had recognised the high costs associated with high staff turnover and the value in offering career paths.
She said, as a result, more people were choosing to work in retail because they were being offered the chance to advance themselves and broaden their experience.
“Today retailers are increasingly employing people on a full-time basis and introducing excellent traineeship programs such as the nationally recognised Certificate II Retail Operations,” Ms Vroomans said.
“Younger people can see retail is an exciting industry that offers them a great deal.”
She said the change was due to forward thinking retailers who realised they needed a stable, experienced and service oriented workforce in order to be competitive.
“As well as building a satisfied workforce, employers who offer career paths to employees gain other benefits,” Ms Vroomans said.
“By offering people the chance to learn on the job and broaden their knowledge and experience through study, employers are reaping the benefits in the longer term by having committed employees who will seek to develop their career with the company,” she said.
