CHIEF Justice Wayne Martin’s campaign to dispense with wigs and ceremonial gowns has apparently met with some resistance among Perth’s judiciary. Mr Martin said he hoped to persuade his colleagues to follow the lead of the Federal and High courts, which have given up the more colourful trappings of office. When the assembled judges appeared for the official launch of Law Week, he said "some of you may have noticed that we are not as colourfully dressed as on past ceremonial occasions". The judges and masters resolved to wear contemporary robes for ceremonial sittings but Mr Martin said they will continue to wear more traditional regalia "for criminal trials in which, it is argued, it confers advantages of anonymity and solemnity".
