Regions get high speed link

AMCOM Telecommunications start of a new high-speed telecommunications link between Adelaide and Melbourne will give regional cities along the route access to the latest voice, data and Internet services.

The link is part of a multi-million dollar investment in South Australia that has made the company the second largest infrastructure-owning carrier in the state after Telstra.

A memorandum of understanding was also recently signed between Amcom, Cisco Systems and the Northern Territory University to trial a gigabit ethernet service over the Amcom fibre optic network that links NTU’s Casuarina and Palmerston campuses.

NTU information technology services division director Doone Jones said the downtime for the cut over of the Amcom link from the existing 100Mb to gigabit ethernet was less than one minute, which was impressive.

Amcom recently projected an EBITDA for the 2002 financial year of $10.9 million. It announced an accumulated loss at the end of the 1999 financial year of $12.7 million.
