The design of the project was led by the Department of Transport, in collaboration with several stakeholders including town planning and design firm Taylor Burrell Barnett and DevelopmentWA, with the Pilbara Ports Authority leading the construction of the project.
The Town of Port Hedland has recommended the Regional Joint Development Assessment Panel approve stage one works on the project.
The JDAP was meant to meet this Thursday, but that meeting has now been rescheduled to September 21, due to an extension of time to receive additional information from the Department of Water and Environment Regilation and the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions.
Spoilbank Marina plans to feature a four lane boat ramp; 21 boat pens (with capacity to expand to 80); trailer parking for up to 200 vehicles; a public fishing jetty; public event space and amenities; a swimming beach; and a waterfront promenade to reflect the Yintha Kariyarra creation serpent story.
The state government committed to funding the project in 2019, following more than 20 years of canvassing, and estimates more than 200 jobs will be created during construction.
Once granted approval, site mobilisation and early works are expected to start next month, with tenders expected to be awarded shortly for an anticipated two-year build.
Prior to site works starting, the Town of Port Hedland has outlined several conditions, including the submission of a revised construction environmental management plan.
Regional development minister Alannah MacTiernan has previously said the project would drive transformational change for the area, creating a revitalised commercial, cultural and recreational hub.
"The Spoilbank Marina has been talked about for more than 20 years, and our Government is making the dream a reality,” she said.
"The Spoilbank Marina will significantly improve access and safety for boaties in Hedland while also creating a fantastic new amenity for a town that makes a massive contribution to WA's economy.”
The state government has previously outlined a total construction budget of $121.5 million, setting aside an additional $15 million towards operating the marina. The Town of Port Hedland will contribute $37.5 million towards the project.
