Hassell selected for $17m regional project

Design firm HASSELL has been appointed as the architects for the new $17.8 million South Regional Tafe Esperance campus, with planning and design works now under way.

The new campus will be developed on land adjacent to Esperance High School oval, as a means to support student’s access to vocational and education programs.

It will replace the Tafe’s existing facilities located next to the high school on Pink Lake Road.

Hassell will consult with South Regional Tafe in the coming months during the planning and design works to ensure the campus provides industry relevant training facilities.

Specific inclusions comprise special purpose classrooms, computer laboratories and simulated industry training environments for community services and nursing/aged care.

New trade workshops will also be built and fitted with industry relevant training equipment to benefit metal fabrication, engineering, light automotive and building construction students.

Construction is anticipated to start in 2020-2021 and open to students in time for the 2022 academic year.

The project will add to Hassell’s impressive portfolio of recent education and state government projects including the University of Western Australia’s new engineering school E-Zone, as well as being a co-designer for Optus Stadium and the WA Museum.

Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery said training was at the heart of the state government’s plan for jobs.

“We want to ensure we are training Western Australians with the practical skills that local employers are looking for so they are best placed to take up job opportunities,” she said.

“The industry relevant training spaces planned for the new Esperance campus means students will get hands-on experience, giving them a head-start when transitioning to the workplace."
