A statement released by Cricket Australia today confirmed the passing of Phillip Hughes, after failing to regain consciousness from an injury sustained in the Sheffield Shield on Tuesday.
“He was not in pain before he passed and was surrounded by his family and close friends,” the statement said.
“As a cricket community we mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”
The South Australian batsman was struck in the head by a bouncer at the SCG on Tuesday.
He fell into a coma and never regained consciousness.
The entire round of Sheffield Shield matches across the country were officially abandoned yesterday.
