ROYAL Perth Hospital’s ear, nose and throat department consultant and private practitioner, Stuart Miller, has launched a new business venture.
But it has nothing to do with medicine.
Mr Miller’s once part-time hobby of nature photography has now managed to find its own dedicated gallery space at Mr Miller’s private offices in West Perth – Kingfisher Gallery.
“First and foremost I am an ear, nose and throat surgeon, but second and foremost I am a serious photographer and I’m interested in photographing nature and wildlife,” Mr Miller said.
“Any spare time I have I get out and take photographs.”
A gift from his father, coupled with his work as a medical practitioner, led him towards a more diversified career path.
“I have always been a nature lover and my interest in photography grew out of my work. I used photos a lot for teaching and for scientific articles,” Mr Miller said.
“My father gave me a camera with a telephoto lens 10 years ago and I took it on trips to the bush. When I say bush I mean out to Africa, to Antarctica, and also Australia.
“I then decided to take my photography to a higher level and I did a tertiary course at the Mt Lawley Tafe.”
Mr Miller’s work was exhibited at the Fremantle Arts Centre earlier this year and at other exhibitions throughout the State.
“When it came back it was clogging up the office and my wife suggested we move it out of the office and open a gallery.”
Jan Miller is a picture framer and has framed her husband’s best works.
Mr Miller is keen to promote collections from other artists at his West Perth gallery.
“We want to concentrate on flora, fauna, and the native wilderness in WA,” he told WA Business News.
Kingfisher Gallery is located at 51 Colin Street West Perth.
