Corporate trainer Fieldworks NLP has also used neuro linguistic programming models to train senior WA detectives to detect lies and improve interviewing.
Put simply, NLP ex-amines communication behaviour patterns. Understanding these can help us to be more effective communicators.
Developed from clinical psychology, NLP was pioneered by Americans researchers Richard Banker and John Grinder.
Fieldworks NLP managing director Michael Field employs its strategies to train corporate clients in the secrets of the world’s most successful communicators.
“The ability to communicate with extraordinary skill is essential to any businessperson committed to achieving personal improvement,” Mr Field said.
“One of the basic models (and there are literally hundreds in NLP), shows how the direction of eye movement reveals how a person is thinking.
“You will notice if you ask someone about their future, they automatically look up and left.
“If you ask someone about the present, and they look up and across, this may indicate some fabrication of their information, because they are looking to the future.
“NLP studies involuntary actions such as this, as well as pupil dilation, sweating on the top lip, thinning of the top lip, blushing and breathing rate. These are things we cannot control.”
But NLP models are only a guide. They only reflect the ‘potential meaning’ of our communication techniques.
Mr Field said NLP was highly applicable to sales and marketing, applying for a job or evaluating a potential employee.
