Perth-based internet service provider iiNet will provide broadband for 3G mobile phone operator 3 Mobile's X-Series service, which will enable customers to make calls using voice over internet protocols through Skype.
3 Mobile will use iiNet broadband for use on the X-Series of services from remote PC access software group Orb Networks, which enable 3 Mobile users to access their personal digital media files including pictures, music, videos, webcams and television from their home computer.
3 Mobile, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, launched the X-Series in the UK last year, and in Hong Kong in January.
The X-Series will further allow 3 Mobile customers to access services such as Google, Hotmail and Yahoo!7 mail and instant messaging services, eBay and others.

iiNet Limited (ASX: IIN) announced that it has teamed with 3 mobile to support 3's new X-Series service, launched today. iiNet is the preferred broadband provider for the X-Series - a new suite of services that bring the best of the Internet to the mobile phone. With the X-Series, customers can make calls using Skype and get the best Internet and instant messaging services from Yahoo!7, ninemsn, Google and eBay - all on their X-Series mobile phone.
The X-Series also allows customers to access files on their home PC from their mobile with Orb. A reliable, high speed broadband connection is required for the uplinking of files, such as music, home video, photographs or work files, from a customer's PC to the handset. iiNet's super fast broadband2+ is recommended by 3 as the preferred broadband solution for optimal use of the X-Series Orb service. iiNet does not include uploads as part of a customer's broadband quota, allowing confident use of 3's PC-to- mobile functionality.
3's X-Series customers will be provided with information on iiNet's high speed broadband services and will be directed to a special web page, or a dedicated phone number, where they can sign up immediately for broadband service.
"3's X-Series is like broadband in your pocket, and we're excited to be the broadband provider of choice for 3's X-Series customers," said Michael Malone, managing director, iiNet. "Not only does this alliance create a new sales channel for our broadband services, but it shows that innovative companies like 3 recognise that reliable, super fast DSL is the foundation for the robust technologies and applications that customers want today."
"The X-Series is all about giving our customers the freedom, choice and experience they get with the Internet today on a PC, on their mobile. An alliance with iiNet to support the delivery of the X-Series will mean a complete experience for our customers as well as a continuing strong value proposition," said Nigel Dews, CEO, 3 mobile. "iiNet is a true Internet pioneer and front runner in the high speed home broadband market."
