Western Australians have dominated the Master Builders Association’s national awards, with the top prize of residential builder of the year going to local Adrian Zorzi, and Built Holdings and Doric winning major prizes in the commercial categories for WA projects.
Mr Zorzi, who is a third-generation builder, was named ‘national residential master builder of the year’ and also won the national luxury project home prize, for a $2 million-plus house in Witchcliffe in the South West.
Master Builders Association WA executive director, Michael McLean, said there were more than 5,000 entries in the luxury project home category, describing Mr Zorzi’s win as an incredible achievement.
“It highlights the skills of the builder, Adrian Zorzi, the high standard of his supervision, and the quality of his team of specialist contractors and suppliers,” he said.
“Everyone involved in building this magnificent home should be very proud of their achievement, which has now been recognised by our national panel of judges.”
Mr McLean said the three-storey, bespoke plantation-style house was a “masterpiece of custom building at its finest”.
Mr Zorzi said the brief for the home was to design and build a luxury home to be opulent, yet comfortable for three generations of family.
“We believe that everyone in our team, from designers and supervisors, to site workers and tiler, took an incredible amount of pride in delivering this home, as they do with all of our homes, and it’s evident in every detail,” he said.
“This national win shines a spotlight on WA’s South West region and showcases the absolute pinnacle of craftsmanship and talent of the skilled local tradespeople.”
Also last night, Built won the top prize in the historical renovation or restoration category, for its work on the $80 million revamp of the State Buildings.
Built was responsible for transforming the run down and neglected Old Treasury Building into the luxury COMO The Treasury Hotel, which was recently named the second-best hotel on earth by Conde Nast travel magazine.
Mr McLean said the project had revived one of the city’s most treasured examples of architectural heritage.
Doric also won a national prize for its work at the State Buildings, in the entertainment and recreational facilities category for its new City of Perth library.
The seven-storey library was Perth’s first major civic building to be constructed since the Perth Concert Hall, more than 40 years ago.
“The City of Perth library is a fantastic building of the highest quality workmanship across all trades,” Mr McLean said.
“Perth is very lucky to have such an outstanding builder to provide the state with this iconic public building.”
