Increasing demand for beauty and health products in Hong Kong and mainland China has prompted Austrade, the Australian Government's export promotion agency, to recommend Australian business take advantage of opportunities in the region.

Increasing demand for beauty and health products in Hong Kong and mainland China has prompted Austrade, the Australian Government's export promotion agency, to recommend Australian business take advantage of opportunities in the region.

Australia's exports of beauty and health related products has risen to $127 million in 2004-05 - a growth of $48 million in four years.

Austrade's Hong-Kong based Senior Trade Commissioner Peter Osborne invited Australian businesses involved in the health and beauty sectors to capture this wave of increased opportunities in Asia by participating in Austrade's Australian Pavilion stand at Cosmoprof Asia and The Natural Health Fair 2006 in Hong Kong from 15-17 November.

"The market for health and beauty products is growing rapidly, particularly in Asia, as the level of disposable income rises," Mr Osborne said.

"Last year, Hong Kong alone imported $788 million of beauty, make-up, skincare preparations and associated products. Then you have China, their thirst for cosmetics generated $14 billion (85 billion Yuan) in sales 2005.

"At last year's Cosmoprof Asia and Natural Health Fair exhibitions, almost $10 million in sales were made by Australian businesses that participated in Austrade's stand," he said.

Cosmoprof Asia 2006 and The Natural Health Fair 2006 form Austrade's key annual beauty and health promotional activity in Asia as the two exhibitions represent the largest combined trade fair for the beauty and natural health sectors. For Australian businesses wishing to participate, it is recommended particularly for those involved in the beauty salon, perfumery, cosmetics, toiletries and hair products sectors as well as for those who provide natural healthcare products such as healthy dietary and nutritional supplements, natural, organic and functional food and beverages, natural health remedies and therapies as well as complementary medicines, nutraceuticals and other products and services conducive to healthy living.

Mr Osborne said the event is an ideal opportunity for companies that are considering entry into other Asian markets in addition to Hong Kong, as it provides exhibitors with the chance to meet key buyers from many countries in one location at one time.

"In addition to organising the Australian Pavilion to showcase Australian brands, Austrade has brought delegations of key buyers from neighbouring countries in South East and North East Asia to the event," he said.

"The offer to participate in Austrade's stand extends to those businesses who are already exporting or to businesses that are venturing into exporting for the first time. New exporters may be eligible to apply for Austrade's New Exporter Development Program, a package which entitles participants to exhibit in the Australian Beauty Showcase located within the Australian Pavilions."

An example of a company that found success at Cosmoprof Asia 2005 is Avado Organics, manufacturers of the Pure by Nature range of products. Managing Director, Tammy Fenner said being a part of the Austrade stand last year was well worth while.

"The way Austrade's stand was positioned ensured exhibitors could not go unnoticed. During the exhibition we had great appointments pre organised by Austrade as well as many enquiries from distributors who where there to source product," Ms Fenner said.

"Austrade was always on hand when I needed it and handy with some language barriers I encountered. Since returning from Cosmoprof we've been fortunate to have a lot of people contact us wanting to be our distributor overseas - 99 per cent of the inquiries came from exhibiting at Cosmoprof. We've negotiated sales in Taiwan, Korea and Singapore and we are continuing negotiations with distributors from Hong Kong, China, Europe and the Middle East.

"Cosmoprof has been the most amazing launch pad for Avado. I would strongly recommend anyone who is looking to expand their markets overseas to give it a go," she said.
