The State Government-owned jetty at the port of Wyndham will be upgraded as part of a $10 million expansion and enhancement project.
Transport Minister Simon O'Brien said the plan included $6million for improvements to the jetty, and detailed design work was nearing completion on a new fendering system to replace the existing timber system that was reaching the end of its life.
Operated by the Department of Transport, Wyndham Port is being expanded to maintain or increase its current trade in livestock; nickel concentrate; fuel; ammonium nitrate and general cargo while meeting the future needs of the expanding Ord River Irrigation System.
Funded by the Commonwealth's East Kimberley Development Package, key features of the port's $10million expansion and enhancement plan include:
- preparation of a development plan for the future of the port
- upgrading of the ship fendering system to the berth face of the jetty
- application of a new protective coating to jetty piles and other steelwork
- upgrading of the corrosion protection system for jetty steelwork
- replacement and renovation of port buildings on the jetty and on land
- extension of the hardstand area for storage of additional sea containers
- upgrading of electrical transformers and switching gear
- purchase of livestock trailers for loading of cattle on ships.
Mr O'Brien said tenders had been called for the application of the protective coating to the jetty piles and steel work.
"In July, tenders are expected to be called for the installation of the new fendering system, while replacement of the amenities building on the jetty is under way," he said.
"It's anticipated works on site will be progressively undertaken with overall project completion expected by late 2011."
