Construction will get under way later this month on the $125 million transformation of the Midland Gate Shopping Centre.
On completion in 2006, the centre will comprise about 180 specialty shops, three discount department stores (Target, Big W and K Mart), two supermarkets (Coles and Woolworths) and an eight-cinema Ace Cinemas complex.
Gandel Retail Management joint managing director David Thurin said the decision to invest $125 million to increase the shopping centre from 36,000 square metres to 56,000sq m was supported by significant growth in the region, particularly to the north.
“Our research shows there is already a clear demand for more shopping services and facilities in the region and that is only likely to increase,” Dr Thurin said.
“The region has experienced significant growth since the centre was last developed in 1994, well in excess of the Perth metropolitan average, and is forecast to continue at least the next seven years.”
Currently, Midland Gate has high penetration into a primary trade area within a five-kilometre radius. Its secondary trade area extends north and east, a further 20km due to lack of competitors. It is this secondary trade area that has the highest forecast rate of population growth.
“We have worked for a long time with the local community in planning this redevelopment to ensure that there is a positive outcome for all parties, Dr Thurin said.
“Benefits, which include 1,000 construction jobs and more than 900 ongoing retail jobs, should not be overlooked.”
Dr Thurin said that, on completion, the region would have one of the most dynamic shopping complexes in the State.
More than 3,100 car parking bays will be provided, half of which are undercover as the result of a new basement car park, and deck parking will be provided.
