A total of 80 Western Australians were recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for 2022 including Carmen Lawrence, Murray McHenry, Amber Hasler and Geoffrey Stooke.
A total of 80 Western Australians were recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for 2022 including Carmen Lawrence, Murray McHenry, Amber Hasler and Geoffrey Stooke.
This year’s list list spanned a range of professions from sports to politics to health, acknowledging 992 Australians for their contributions and service to the community.
Governor-General David Hurley said the recipients shared common traits of selflessness, excellence and a commitment to service.
“They’re from different backgrounds, their stories are each unique, and each has served in different ways. This diversity is a strength and each has impacted their community and made it better,” the Governor-General said.
“For that, we thank them and, today, we celebrate them.”
Three Western Australians were awarded Officer of the Order of Australia, namely former WA health commissioner Alan Bansemer, former WA premier Carmen Lawrence and previous director general Department of Workforce Development Ruth Shean.
Ms Lawrence, who was first female Premier and Treasurer of a state government, was recognised for her service as a parliamentarian and to conservation and arts administration.
She retired from politics in 2007 before taking up board a handful of roles, including the Chamber of Arts and Culture and Conservation Council of Western Australia.
Ms Shean, also awarded officer, served as the director-general of Western Australian government’s Department of Workforce Development and has held several government chief executive roles.
Mr Bansemer is a former Western Australian Health Commissioner with 35 years experience in the health sector.
New Members of the Order of Australia include Rugby WA Patron and WA Police and Community Youth Centres State President Geoffrey Stooke for his service to rugby union, sports administration, business and community.
Owner of Nedlands institution Steves and former WA Football Commission chair Murray McHenry was also recognised for service to sport, as well as hospitality.
Also awarded was former Fringe World Fesitval Director and longstanding WA arts and culture contributor Amber Hasler who was acknowledged for her contributions to the industry.
Former Liberal member for the South West Robyn McSweeney was recognised for her service as a parliamentarian.
Marcus Atlas was nodded for significant service to tertiary medical education, and to otolaryngology – a surgical speciality in conditions of the head and neck.
Donna Cross, a West Australian of the Year recipient and Telethon Kids Institute Director, received recognition for her contribution to youth mental health and wellbeing.
Hassell director Peter Lee was acknowledged for his community housing initiatives and contribution to architecture.
