PERTH closely follows Melbourne for the incidence of holiday home ownership, with 8.8 per cent of households in Perth owning a holiday home, according to a recent BIS Shrapnel report.
The report also concludes that baby boomers are fuelling the take-up in holiday homes, and that the incidence of holiday home ownership will continue to climb steadily during the next five years.
Pro Property managing director Brett Wilkins said the survey matched development and sales patterns, with three quarters of holiday homes situated in coastal locations and major development projects in Margaret River, Bunbury, Mandurah, Rockingham, Karratha and Broome.
“There will be a huge increase in lifestyle property investments in Perth and major regional centres as the baby boomers get older and want a lifestyle change in their retirement and begin to gain access to the billions of dollars locked in super funds,” Mr Wilkins said.
He said demand was not just coming from locals, with 18 per cent of enquiries about South West properties coming from expatriates and 7 per cent from international investors.
