GREENIES often bemoan Western Australians’ reliance on cars for getting around, but an international survey has found that we rank relatively high in our use of public transport. Global recruitment agency Kelly Services surveyed 70,000 people in 28 countries, finding that 64 per cent of Australians, and 68 per cent of Sandgropers, use public transport in preference to a motor vehicle. This put us well below countries like Indonesia (93 per cent) and Hong Kong (88 per cent) but way above the gas guzzlers in the United States (34 per cent). Notably, WA ranked higher than many Western European countries that are often hailed for their comprehensive public transport services.
