Wastewater plant could provide future northern suburbs marina

Water Resources Minister John Kobelke said plans for a new wastewater plant at Alkimos could help provide a new marina in the region.

"The State Government has provided an additional $93.8million in the Budget to build a new water treatment plant in Alkimos," Mr Kobelke said.

"The northern suburbs are booming and there is growing demand for residential and industrial land throughout the region.

"The wastewater plant will help cater for that and there is an exciting potential spin-off for boat enthusiasts along the northern suburbs coastline by building the wastewater plant."

Design works show that building at the planned Alkimos site would yield about three million cubic metres of rubble, mostly limestone.

"Any rocks and building material not needed for development at the site could be used for any future marina development nearby," the Minister said.

"Looking to maximise the advantage to the community, we could stockpile the limestone material for use in a future marina development.

"I am sure northern suburbs residents, boat owners and the developer of a marina would all appreciate the sensible planning which will ensure that we do not lose an opportunity when developing this much-needed infrastructure at Alkimos."
