The West Australian Symphony Orchestra will depart for the People's Republic of China on May 8 - its first international tour in 23 years.
Led by chief conductor Matthias Bamert and acclaimed French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, 98 musicians and 11 management and production staff will travel to Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Hangzhou (the capital of WA's Sister-State, the Zhejiang Province).
Culture and Arts Minister Sheila McHale said the tour would be an excellent opportunity to develop cultural understanding between China and WA.
"The performances - supported by the State Government and North West Shelf Venture participant companies - will allow the arts, business and government to work together to provide long-term benefits to the WA and Chinese communities,"
Ms McHale said.
"This cultural exchange coincides with the commencement of liquefied natural gas shipments from WA to China in June.
"The agreement marks 30 years of relationship-building and illustrates the trust and confidence both countries have in each other."
The Minister said the WASO's concerts in China would offer a prestigious and fitting forum for diplomatic exchange, trade opportunities and for showcasing WA.
