Western Australia has posted the largest drop in new vehicle sales for the month of May, falling 19 per cent compared to the same time last year, official figures show.
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries said 8,150 vehicles were retailed in May, down from 10,067 units sold in the same month last year.
Over the year to the end of May 2009, sales plummeted 21 per cent on last year to 39,034 units.
Sales of new cars and trucks in Australia fell 14.9 per cent in May with 75,441 new vehicles retailed last month.
The May result left the national market down 19.2 per cent on a year-to-date basis.
The FCAI said Toyota was the top selling company last month with 15,481 vehicles sold, ahead of Holden on 9,177 and Ford on 8,440.
