LEGISLATION was passed this week 10 years ago allowing Federal Airports to be leased to private airport companies. Leases at Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide Airports were expected to be sold on 50-year deals, with the option of a further 49. The Airports Bill also affected other airports around the country, including Darwin, Hobart, Launceston, Townsville, Coolangatta, Canberra and Alice Springs airports. Sydney Airport was to remain public until noise problems were resolved and a second site for the airport could be found. WA Green’s senator, Dee Margetts, successfully moved a series of amendments which would require the management of environmental and noise impacts by lessees, as well as the insulation of all homes exposed to noise above a significant level.
