Western Australia is set to receive first funds from the Rudd government's $650 million Jobs Fund, with the bulk of the funds to go to projects in the south west of Perth.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd today announced first funding of $4.5 million, to be provided to six projects in WA that will support more than 190 jobs, 60 work experience positions and three traineeships.
Mr Rudd, who is currently in Perth, said nearly $4 million will be invested in projects in the south west of Perth, supporting more than 160 jobs and 50 work experience positions.
He added the projects cover a range of industries including retail, construction and environmental management.
"These projects will support jobs and training opportunities for local workers, and build infrastructure that will deliver benefits long into the future," he said.
The Jobs Fund was launched earlier this year with the aim of supporting jobs and creating work experience opportunities nationwide.
Yesterday Mr Rudd announced the government had established an employment taskforce to help staff future resource projects, including the upcoming $50 billion Gorgon gas joint venture.
It follows Premier Colin Barnett's announcement earlier this week of an overhaul of the state's Tafe colleges and the creation of a new department dedicated to training.
