WA public opposed to 9pm trading: survey

The people of Western Australia remain opposed to the state government's plan to introduce weeknight trading to 9pm, a survey by the WA Independent Grocers Association has shown.

Results of the survey indicate almost 60 per cent of people believe the government should honour the outcome of the 2005 referendum.

Four years ago the referendum resulted in 59 per cent of the elctorate rejecting weeknight trading and just over 61 per cent opposing Sunday trading.

Paterson Market Research conducted the survey this month on behalf of the WA Independent Grocers Association which suggests 54 per cent of metropolitan respondents and 70 per cent of country respondents said the government should stick with the results of the referendum.

However, while 49 per cent were personally against weeknight trading, 46 per cent of those surveyed approved of the idea, a difference of only 3 per cent.

Grocers Association president, John Cummings said the government needed to rethink its position on the issue.
