Western Australia has suffered the biggest yearly fall in vehicle sales compared to other states and territories, with figures slumping nearly 20 per cent.
Latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show sales in WA reached a seasonally adjusted 8538 units last month, a 19.5 per cent drop from sales achieved in January last year.
Compared to the December 2008 month, vehicles sales dropped 1.5 per cent from 8667 units.
Nationally, vehicle sales fell 17 per cent year on year to a seasonally adjusted 76,224 units. Compared to December, sales dropped 1.1 per cent.
Tasmania was the only state to record a monthly increase in sales, rising 4 per cent from a seasonally adjusted 1383 units to 1438.
However sales in Tasmania were down 16 per cent year on year.
Queensland recorded the second largest fall in yearly car sales, with figures dropping 18 per cent to 16,141 while New South Wales recorded a 17.5 per cent fall to 22,995.
Vehicle sales in Victoria reached 20,134, down 15 per cent from January last year and South Australia reported a 15.6 per cent drop to 4941.
