WA misses Games action

THE Sydney Olympic games will not bring much benefit for Perth’s convention operators.

Perth Convention Bureau managing director Owen Cook said the Olympics would have little affect on the Perth market.

“The Asian incentives market is still strong,” Mr Cook said.

“However, we’re not getting much of the Olympics action.”

One of the arguments for fast-tracking the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre was to gain some of the Olympics action.

However, the convention centre will not be finished until 2002.

WA has secured some of the Olympic teams from other nations in the lead up to the games.

Nations such as Greece have sent their athletes here to acclimatise to Australian conditions before the Games.
