THE WA Ministry of Justice has won an AusAid contract to develop the pilot for a community corrections program in Sri Lanka.
Attorney General Peter Foss said the contract was for provision of advice on legislation for community-based orders, assistance in the creation of a community corrections division and training in Perth for key Sri Lankan staff.
Mr Foss said the Sri Lankan Government was keen to establish alternatives to imprisonment for offenders convicted of minor offences in the country’s lower courts as the prison population was more than double its capacity.
The pilot will be conducted in the city of Colombo.
