WA businesses online but not tweeting

Western Australian businesses are the most likely in the country to have a website but many WA small businesses are choosing not to use social media, according to two new surveys.

For most business people, social media is still a curiosity. When and if the strength of the business case can be shown to exceed the time and resources needed to learn and manage the use of various social media, then business owners will make the effort to include social media in their marketing mix. Till then, they'll probably remain confused and too busy, often blindly preferring to do business the old and hard way.

In 2010 - Linkedin has been the #1 source of new business for me. Anybody not using Linkedin for business generation is missing possibly the most important tool to be created in the last 5 years. Facebook and Twitter are catching up in their usefulness for business generation, but it does take a bit longer to build business relationships in these mediums. Regards Peter

As with any new technology it takes a while to catch on. I think as with all types of advertising mediums, some businesses are better suited to promoting themselves in social media than others. The target market for the Library Nightclub is a little different to that to Denture Repairs :)

Real world
Could it be that 'social media' is not something most businesses get a dividend from? Get real - most businesses haven't the manpower to do the jobs that need doing, yet alone trip it with the chardonnay set! Good luck to those who see it as a tool. To 95% of businesses it just doesn't deliver!

West Australians are outdoors enjoying themselves after building real business models. I look for businesses that don't have their hand in all social media outlets. How can a business, do it all and still be true to their consumer & audience? Do some social media & blogging, but do not try and be all. Be true to YOU, business and the community will find you through word of mouth.

This is an interesting article that probably reflects more of WA's adoption to emerging Technology than Australia as awhole. Australians are now the biggest consumers in the World for Social Media and conversations are happening around companies brands and services whether they choose to engage or not. Marketers and Company Owners are only as good as the information they are fed and I think it is more an issue of not having enough specialists in the WA market advising companies on how best to engage and use Social Media to drive true ROI.
