Former University of Western Australia Vice-Chancellor Alan Robson died yesterday at the age of 79.
Former University of Western Australia Vice-Chancellor Alan Robson died yesterday at the age of 79.
Professor Robson had a prominent role in higher education, science and research in Western Australia and led a number of government reviews.
He was Vice-Chancellor for eight years between 2004 and 2011 and prior to that was Deputy Vice-Chancellor for 11 years.
Professor Robson received multiple accolades including Officer of the Order of Australia in 2013, the Australian Medal of Agricultural Science and the Fiona Stanley Medal, and he was inducted into the WA Science Hall of Fame in 2015.
He was chair of medical research body, the Perron Institute, for five years to 2022.
Professor Robson was also chair of the WA Museum Board of Trustees and served on the board of the CSIRO and Black Swan State Theatre Company
UWA’s current Vice-Chancellor Amit Chakma said Professor Robson had been recognised as an outstanding leader, friend and mentor to many.
“Professor Robson was also highly regarded by our staff and the wider community for his commitment to ensuring the University was a place where diversity was recognised and celebrated,” Professor Chakma said.
Perron Institute’s current chair Rob McKenzie said Professor Robson led the organisation during an unprecedented period of growth.
"He brought a wealth of experience as a leader and chair, significant research and advisory experience, a strong interface with industry, and a commitment to innovation.
"We are grateful for his contribution to the Institute’s leadership and growth.
"On behalf of the Perron Institute board and staff, we convey our deepest sympathy to the Robson family.”
Professor Robson’s previous roles at UWA included Foundation Director of the Cooperative Research Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture (CLIMA), Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, and Head of the School of Agriculture.
He was also Chair of the Group of Eight from 2007 to 2010, Deputy Chair of the Council of the National Library for seven years, Deputy Chair of Universities Australia for three and a member of the Western Australian Science Council.
